It may not surprise you to
learn that the remodeling market has softened recently after years
of exceptional growth. What is surprising however is that, according
to a recent report by the Joint Center for Housing Studies of Harvard
University, despite the current economy, consumer spending on
home improvements is expected to increase 44% between 2005 and 2015.
Several
other indicators also confirm that now is an ideal time to start
a home improvement related business:
-
While the type of home improvement projects may be changing, homeowners
are still investing in their homes. Many homeowners are taking
on less expensive projects such as routine replacements, system
upgrades and mid-range (rather than high end) home improvements
and these types of jobs will continue to keep contractors busy.
-
High energy prices will drive a significant portion of home improvement
projects as homeowners strive to make their homes more energy
efficient by upgrading heating and cooling systems, insulating
attics, replacing windows, etc.
-
While home values may be dropping in several regions of the country,
69% of Americans still believe that making a home improvement
will help increase their home's value.
What's
clear is thatdespite the economy-- trends favor substantial
growth in home-improvement services. How you chose to take advantage
of these opportunities is up to you.
Best
wishes for a healthy, happy and prosperous 2009!
